My little part of Ohio
THE 1700'S.........WHEN WHITE MEN WEREN'T WELCOME
The borders were Lake Erie to the North....The Applachian Mountains to the East......and the Ohio River to the South
These are the men who tried to stop the hoardes of white men from crossing these borders and forever loosing their way of life....
But in the end, the Long knives were to numerous and their resources were uexhaustable....by the early 1800's the tribes of the Oyo (Ohio) Valley knew they had indeed lost their land and their way of life....
CORNSTALK - Shawnee chief
This famous Shawnee fought the whiteman's encroachment for many years, but when he saw it was of no use he went to make peace....Peace?.They threw him in a jail cell and killed him while he was behind bars..
LITTLE TURTLE - The Miami's greatest chief
Little Turtle lead his Miamis and many other Indians into many a successful batttle. His 2 biggest victories were when he lead the Indians at Gen. Harmmar's defeat and co- lead with Blue Jacket at Gen. St. Clair's defeat along the Wabash river in Midwestern Ohio. He too saw peace was the only option in his later years, and following Gen. "Mad" Anthony Waynes successful Campaigns Little Turtle signed The Treaty of Greenville. He died of gout in a home in Indiana built for him by the Governer. Little Turtle is noted for having met George Washington.
BLUE JACKET - A white boy who sprouted into a Shawnee Warrier chief
Born a white boy, Blue Jacket was captured by the Shawnee at an early age. He grew into a great warrier. He is best known for co-leading the defeat over Gen. St. Clair at the Wabash river where Modern Day Ft. Recovery, Oh. is located. He bacame a loyal follower of Tecumseh and fought by his side many times. But after the Indians suffered the defeat at the Battle of Fallen Timbers he too gave up the fight and moved West with his family and any Shawnee that would follow....leaving Tecumseh and Ohio for good.
TECUMSEH - The most feared of all Shawnee
Tecumseh......the most famous of all Shawnees. He first became feared by the white man when he made raids on the raft fulls of settlers floating down the Spaylawithiseepi (Ohio River). He would also take raiding parties accross the river and wreak havoc on the settlements in Kan-Tukee. Though he was never a chief of his own people, he was destined to be the chief over a conglomerate of tribes which came from all geograghical locations to follow him and push the Shimaneese (white man) back accross the Appalachians once and for good. His dream was to raise an Indian army of 50,000 warriors, but thanks to his brother The Prophet and the lack of Brittish "promised" help, this dream was never realized. But where the others quit the fight, Tecumseh stood his ground and would not relinquish his lands. Tecumseh died fighting as a warrior in a battle in Canada along the river Thimes.
SPORTS OHIO STYLE
In Ohio....we love our sports. Especialy football. You either like my Browns or you like the gals in Cincinnati. But even though you may like a stupid team like the Bengals
we will at least agree on 1 thing.........we both love OSU.....GO BUCKS!!!!!!!
Now the only people in Ohio that dont root for the Buckeyes are those not native to Ohio and haven't lived here long enough to conform.....or those who are just plain ignorant. And let me just state that few crimes are worthy of capitol punishment......but being an Ohioan and rooting for "The team up North" is one of them!
We represent major league baseball well with a team in each division...the Reds in the National League and the Indians in the American league. Since they are in different leagues feel free to root for both.....LOL....I wont call ya stupid or ignorant!
My little part of Ohio!
Welcome to sunset along the East bank of Grand lake Saint Marys.......Saint Marys, Ohio (Auglaize county) is where I live....born and bred here!
The lake provides recreation for thousands of people each year. With over 14,000 acres of water to pleasure boat, fish, hunt, or camp beside.....Grand lake insures there's something to satisfy your outdoor recreational needs!
Needed to supply the Miami Erie Canal (which splits dowtown St. Marys) with water, the lake was hand dug with picks and shovels by German and Irish imigrants. It used to be the largest man made body of water in the world and also had the first off shore oil wells in the world!
Prior to being named St. Marys, the small settlement was called Girty's town. Named after Simon Girty, a white man who set up a trading post along the shores of the St. Marys River. Girty sympathized with the Shawnee Indians and fought at their side during St. Claire's defeat and many other skirmishes.
Today St. Marys, a town of approximately 8000, is made up of people of German and Irish ancestry. We are primarily protestants and Catholics. We have a good mixture of agriculture and industry.
This site is still under construction, but I promise it wont take as long to build as Cleveland's new stadium!
